Hi All, Got these from my local coin shop today for which I am thinking is a good bargain. The local coin shop only specialize in US coins and they had few coins that they want to sell quickly. What do you guys think ? Mexico 1866 1 Peso - $75 27.4g Netherlands 1626 Lion Thaler -$75 13.03g Italy Venice - no date 70 Soldi - Silver spot value -$15 15.72g

I think they are nice coins but I wouldn't have paid that much for them. That Mexican Peso of yours, according to my book, trends at $36 in Fine-12 and $55 in VeryFine-20. It is from the brief period of the Empire of Maximilian which only lasted from 1864-1867. As for the other two coins I can't really say anything.

Hi TCG , I may have been bit carried away with that peso as I was fascinated by the connection between the Mexico emperor to the Austrian empire. I am used to see Maximillian kings in Talers and this seems to be so out of character. Here is good reading on Maximilliano's regin , http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maximi..._I_of_MexicoAny way I was not ale to find anything under $100 on ebay or in MA shops for this one.

Looking more closely on the 2nd coin , it turn out to be a 1/2 Lion Daalder from West Friesland province. Initially I thought it to be a full Daalder. Which make sense for the weight and the inscription of West on obverse. NGC price guide shows $50 for VG, so I may have spent little too much there. Nevertheless pretty exciting.

Nice coins. Sometimes we pay too much because we like the coins. If you had not bought them and went back to the shop next week and saw they were gone, you'd kick yourself for not buying them when you had the chance. Just enjoy them and let the price be an issue when it comes time to sell them. I've owned several of the Maximilian Pesos, but the other two are the coins I would be excited about. You don't find those very often.

I don't think you paid to much for them....And your dong the right thing checking on prices in MA shops ( although some of the sellers tend to be optimistic) I find Krause is good for an overview of coins..but the non US values are very often out of date. If you are looking at Non US coins you do need to check the Catalogs produced in the countries the coins you are looking at buying are from. Years ago I was told that usually coins in their home country sell for higher prices than they do else where......it was very useful advice I collect NZ coins as well as Austrian. In Europe I have found some great bargains on NZ coins, and the US is a great place to find bargains for European coins.

The only one of the three that has been extensively counterfeited is the Maximilian Peso. Check the reeds to make sure there is NO OVERLAP. Look for evidence of grinding around the edge and make sure the reeds are uniform all the way around the edge. This coin was made on a more modern collared press so the coin must be round.
The 1/2 Daalder appears to be real and there are VERY FEW 1/2 D coins known as modern forgeries unlike the Daalder itself. This coin is hand struck - hammered and the partial doubling of the strike is good proof.
The final coin was struck with a roller press. The edges are cut with snips and should retain some evidence of that happening. Beware cast imitations of this one that are underweight. High quality numismatic forgeries are unknown to me.
All in all a very interesting selection - you need a screw press milled coin to complete a mini set of the 4 major coin making methods.
Price is what you are willing to pay for an item. If you are happy that is ALL that matters. Study these coins and learn from them. When questions arise about any physical feature you do not absolutely understand - ASK. The only dumb question is the one Not asked.

austrokiwi/IndianGoldEagle, thank you both for the feedback.
swamperbob, thank you and appreciate your expert opinion as always. Above all thank for reminding the value of learning and not just accumulating coins as some time I tend to do.
