In hand, this coin appeared to be in better shape than the rest of the gold coins and a local dealer took an interest in this one. I don't think there's anything that special about it, what do you think? Low MS? Lots of bag marks but I don't see circulation wear.

Sorry about the poor photos, didn't have time to get out the good camera and macro lens. If better pictures are needed for opinions, I can take better shots later today.

Thanks!

Can you soften the light (flash) a little bit? It looks polished, higher grade though.

I'll take pics with my good camera this afternoon. These were hastily snapped with a USB camera (new) and I haven't got the kinks worked out yet.

Looks MS62-63, if authentic

I agree with a potential MS-62 or 63 but only if surfaces are original. The over-lit photos make it look polished; if it is then it will only have bullion value.

Ask your local dealer just how interested he is, in dollars! If his offer is over bullion-equivalent it's a good bet he thinks it's an original uncirculated piece.

I'd say the details are at least an AU. The glare makes it hard to determine if there is wear and makes the coin appear polished.

Looks like you are using either a flash for the images or a light directly on the coin, either of which make it impossible to see anything. It looks like a glossy AU with altered surfaces from the images, but I imagine it would look quite different with less severe lighting.

OK, I *finally* managed to take some new pics. Lots of trouble with the new Mac, trying to order and install PSE11, yadda yadda yadda. Attached are four new pictures, different lighting. I'm interested in grading opinions on this one because it may be of high enough quality to warrant slabbing. In particular, there is a significant jump in FMV around the AU to MS grades and I think this coin is right around there.

Your grading input is much appreciated...

BTW, this coin was in a plastic coin case. I'm sure my granddad did not pull this one from the cash register. He probably traded for it or bought it, some time between ~1930-1970. Unlikely that it ever saw circulation.

dsfreeworld-- my brother and I are keeping a sampling of everything but my mom wants to sell most of it. As for saving it for the grandkids, my brother and I are the end of the line. Neither of us had children. Now we are of an age where we don't feel inclined to keep a lot of memorabilia. I think I'll put this gold coin in the pile to send for TPG'ing and we will sell it in the foreseeable future.

Going through this collection certainly has piqued my interested in coin collecting though. I will keep certain portions of the family collection and I plan to start examining my pocket change for interesting varieties, just for the thrill of it.

Based on what I see in the second set of images - very nicely done, by the way, excellent use of contrasting lighting to bring out different features - this one belongs in plastic.

Thanks, SsuperDdave. I'm not at my place and don't have various lights/light tent so I made do. Using auto setting, the flash deployed and was too harsh so I improvised by wrapping 2 layers of thin white plastic grocery bag over the flash to act as a diffuser (second two pics of second set). It worked so well that I may use that as the default 'light tent'.

I haven't sent this or other coins for grading yet but I just signed up with PCGS and CoinFacts. I'm browsing through photos of various PCGS graded coins (***loving CoinFacts right now***) and I think this coin has a real shot at MS64 based on comparing with other PCGS-graded MS64s photos. The MS63s pics I'm seeing have more bag marks and rim dings.
