Got this coin, everything seems fine but weight is off, is only 12.1g. I have lots of other 1880's 50c and all are the correct 12.98g but not this one. What does that mean? mule? counterfeit? Couldn't imagine anyone counterfeiting this coin, it isn't high value and also considering the intricate text on the rim would make it probably not worth it.
Counterfeiting coins long ago was often a matter of small percentages and vast production, though .88 of one gram would hardly be profitable as you mentioned. Could the very small bits of the rim that are missing add up to .88g?
