I know that PCGS does not grade error coins, but why do they grade VAMs? Is it because of their popularity or something else?

PCGS does indeed grade errors, they just charge an arm and a leg($55/$65) for the privilege VAMs are arguably the single most popular series die varieties sought by collectors but PCGS will only attribute TOP 100, HOT 50, and Hit List 40 VAMs while ANACS is the only grading service that attributes every single cataloged VAM.
