The seller claims this coin is uncirculated, but has some "scuff marks": http://www.vcoins.com/world/central...ct=3&large=0The marks that I see on either side of the bear on the obverse and below the C on the reverse kind of look like cleaning to me. Any thoughts?

That's a very nice coin, IMHO it's UNC. Ron

snowman, the overall coin looks unc to me. The only thing I wonder about is all the dirt in the beading and some lettering. The pic is not the best and it could just be toning. Cannot tell for sure. Jim

It's hard for me to see any wear on the coin that would be associated with circulation. There don't appear to be any flat spots in the devices and the rim appears intact with rounded beading the entire circumference.
Does anyone think the scuffs on the reverse of the coin look as though something was cleaned off the coin? Without the coin in hand it's hard for me to tell.
I don't know the typical value of this coin, but it could certainly come home with me for the right price! It's very nice.

Looks like a nice coin. It's hard to say how it got scuffed. Could be from cleaning or just the way it was stored or something. It certainly looks uncirculated.
FWIW I've bought from that dealer & it was a good transaction. I guess if you got it in hand & there was a problem you could return it within 14 days.

It could be where the image has been touched up using image editing software like Paintbrush, etc, and something like spots has been smudged out.
Just a thought and something to consider, one really needs to see the actual coin or make sure there is a money back guarantee if purchasing sight unseen.

I would agree it is uncirculated but to me it looks like maybe a long time ago somebody toke an eraser and gummed the coin or used an old softcloath or whatever to buff it I would price it as MS but cleaned mechanically

I agree it is a nice coin but don't know if it is uncirculated. Many of the letters have dirt trapped in them which you would think comes from handling.

Slide does not count as wear A new coin lost in the ground and dug up does not count as wear One hundred loving touches by a collector do not count as wear So it is very confusing since 95% of french gold coins come as " cosmetically clean " like one of the UK sellers used to call these 200 year old clean coins

Thank you all for the feedback. It's always nice to get a second opinion. Sometimes I wonder if I'm too picky, but I agree that in all probability this coin was lightly cleaned. I think that I'll keep looking for an uncirculated example of this coin.

I guess the definition of uncirculated is based on two factors. Are you a seller or are you a buyer. If someone digs up a coin that has been in the ground and tells me that it is uncirculated I would first want to know how they know it didn't circulate before it was buried. If a coin has been lovingly touched by a collector to the point where dirt has built up in the crevices then I might be wary of the word uncirculated. There are terms that can better and more accurately describe the condition of a coin than uncirculated. I have taken some real dogs out of a mint roll which you could say were uncirculated, and have found better examples of the same coin in my pocket change which is circulated.
