Hello all,

I am new to this forum, I thought maybe somebody would be able to give me an idea as to what I have here? Found it in a used bag I bought yesterday...I assume this is an old coin but not sure of the origin. Does anyone here know?

This is the opposite side. As you can see it is very worn.
Item is approx 18 mm (.7") in diameter.

Both sides would help identify it. it looks like an ancient to me but its outside my scope so I'll let the experts chime in.

It looks Julian II 360-363ad (Roman) MVLT X

Probably dipped in carpet cleaner (thats how mine looked afterwards )

Thanks for the replies!

Is there any way to tell if it's fake or not? Would it be copper or bronze used in that era? I assume bronze, however it definitely looks like copper to me in the cleaned areas of the coin.

It looks like it was harshly cleaned.

Possible fake but very, very, very unlikely.

There's a place in town here called Gatewest Coin...I am going to take it there and see what they think. I will post what they have to say.

Its a roman one. VOT MVLT X X on the reverse.

Its around 340-380AD. I cant say of the emperor, it may be Julian. And its real.

I brought it to the coin shop and the owner figured it was fake due to the "color"...which didn't make a lot of sense to me since the Roman coins for sale there looked practically identical in color. Anyways, he said because there's no easy way to know for sure, that real or fake it would be worth $3-4.

BenByfield - just curious to know what leads you to say it is real?

I agree it does look like Julian II but I think I can read the remains of 'VIA' before the obverse legend break meaning it could also be of the Emperor Jovian (363-364AD), something like this (not sure how many X / XX types exist etc):

I also agree its real, harshly cleaned and looking at the very circular outline I would suggest its been trimmed and set into something in the past, maybe a necklace or earrings, this would explain it turning up in a handbag. It, at some point slipped its mount and got stuck in the seems or the lining for you to find, cool story
