Here's one of ebay's "estate find" coins.

www.ebay.com/itm/330851342841

The seller is not a coin person.

I understand that these are counterfeited, and I can see how they would be - high value item, even in very worn condition where the small, hard-to-fake details are missing.

So, what is your expert consensus: Real or fake?

BTW, I would never buy one raw, unless I literally had the money to burn. But I'd like to learn how to spot both the good and bad stuff.

I believe the coin is real, but, I can't imagine paying near that price unless certified or inspecting in hand for problems ie cleaning, repair etc.

Looks like a genuine Cohen-4 to me!

Google some 1795 LC pics. Start with the obverse. Compare the Liberty and date sizes and positions, as well as the size and positioning of the portrait.
The Cohen-4 reference could be right, here is a link:

Just offhand it looks good. The link sjh241 posted is to C-5 which it is not, but it does look like C-4.

Thank you for the links, sjh241. I swapped back and forth between the Coin Facts and auction pix, and I agree with philadelphian and Conder101 that it looks real. It's got the die flaw over the R, right number sizes, tilts, and placement, etc.

But I also agree with g048406 that the price is way too high for a raw coin, all the more so with the just-ok, low res photos. Can't tell much about the surfaces, nothing at all about the rims...

Anyways, thank you all for helping me learn more about how to look at coin pix!
