When I started putting together my penny album, I pulled the copper of about 2 dozen boxes or so. I have only been keeping the coppers. I have searched about 4 dozen boxes(Hand sorted) to date. They have been sorted into 2 piles only...pre 1970 and post 1970. Although I'm thinking of trying to hold onto more non coppers and make some more albums. As it stands now, I have about 215 lbs of copper pennies (1996 - 1970) in hopes of a future investment gain of post 1970 and only about 35 rolls of pre 1970 ((1969 - older)not for a lack of trying to have more either.

When I coin roll hunt pennies I seperate them into 5 piles. The first one for 1982-1996, then 1980-1981, 1965-1979, 1953-1964, 1937-1952, and 2012& nicely toned and any rare varieties. The reason I don't have a pile for 1936 and older is because I have never found one before.

I organize mine the following way... 1996-1982 1981-1980 1979-1960 Then for 1959 and earlier I put them in there individual rolls. But like samsnate mentioned.. I think I'm going to keep non copper as well.

As an American, I can honestly say I'd love to have an opportunity to obtain a box of Canadian pennies. At the moment I just have what I find in my rolls of American pennies. Hope I can get my hands on a 2012 Canadian penny or two (ideally one magnetic, one non-magnetic) in the future before they start disappearing to hoarders and Canadian smelters.

Thats actually 215 lbs of copper pennies that I've pulled and put into jars. I also have a box of canadian 1960 -1969 rolls and a box of pre 1982 american. Not sure what I'm going to do with everything yet.

You should try and keep the rarer circulation dates as they would become more valuable quicker. I keep all pre 1960, 1990, and 2012 pennies. The rest of them had too many minted so, it will be a while before they become rare.

If we hoard them, they will never be worth anything. But I suppose if we don't, there won't be any left...

Oddcoins has a point. I think everybody should have a collection or two of 1960-2012 pennies incase one of the dates become scarce.

I can't see the 2012 penny (magnetic or non-magnetic) ever being worth anything other than face value or the price of the material its made from. It has been hoarded by the case the moment it was produced
