I'm just wondering if I should keep all the Canadian pennies I get because the government is going to ask banks to return and melt them starting Feb. 4?

It would be a good idea to start tossing them all into a big penny jar as you accumulate them. I think pennies will remain in circulation for at least another 3-5 years, before they become a rare sight.
The last time the Canadian government retired coins from circulation (i.e. pre-1921 large cents and pre-1922 silver 5 cents), they remained in circulation till the 1940's according to the old timers.

Thanks a lot 1945v :) thats what I'm going to start doing now! Except I think I would be easier to roll them up and put them in boxes for easier storage and handling.

to the forum. If you are going to roll them, you might as well separate them in the following categories 1) 1997 to 2012: (copper plated zinc or steel) 2) 1996 and before (solid copper). These are worth 2.5 cents each. 3) You might consider separating out a third pile for the rarer pre-1965 pennies.(small queen heads and kings) 4) And of course there are the varieties as well. You can get more information in the following link: http://www.coinsandcanada.com/coins-prices.php

Yes we should hoard them. I know a lot of other people will be doing it. Think of all the semi rarities they will destroy that we dont even know about yet!

Wow thanks guys! :-) I will be hoarding them in case some semi-rare/rare variety of pennies are discovered in the future. I like to think of it as if our parents/grandparents hoarded all the silver coins in the sixties, wad then passed it on, we would be sitting in silver right now! So I think we should do the same for our kids and grandchildren who might never get to see a canadian penny! :)

they are only going to get more rare once they are smelted. Does the Mint keep track of which ones they smelt?

I plan to put away 10 boxes or so worth on top of my current copper hoard which is somewhere in the range of 100 pounds.

I dont think theyll keep track because there are billions of pennies waiting to be smelted.

I dont only because I picked up a box from my bank. If I didnt have the box, I would probably look them over a bit more for high grades.

LUCKY! :) It seems with all the hoarding 2012 pemmies are actually somewhat rare in circulation, as I have found 1 in circulation and almost ten searching from two boxes of pennies.

@ccc: I get 2012s in my change all the time. It's rare if I don't. Although, there are two types: magnetic and non-magnetic. I don't keep track of that.
