Hey all!! Happy New Year!! Which error numbering system is better, or more used/useful, or more flexible, out of the two, CONECA and the Cherry Picker's guide. Also, is the Cherry Picker's guide at least as good as getting specialized books on each series, or is it just spotty and generalized? I'm sure it would be cheaper. I'm looking to get into collecting error coins and want to do a bit of educating myself before diving in. I think the CP guide is up to vol. 1 & 2 5th edition. I guess it lists varieties as well as errors? Any info would be helpful. Thank you and good coin hunting in 2013. KK

I'm curious about this. I thought that CONECA numbers were in the Cherry Pickers books...now I have to go look. Won't get a chance to do that until ...tomorrow. Happy New Year.

Buddy:
I didn't buy the book yet, that's why I'm asking the questions. If you are right and the CONECA #'s are in CPG, then it's a slam dunk and question one is resolved.
Let me know after you celebrate the New Year.
Regards,
KK

We are talking Die Varieties not errors. Cherrypicker books do list CONECA #'s as well as several others. Theses books are ok for general (hot list) varieties. You still need to look at each coin because you will miss a lot of varieties if you are only looking for the choosen few that are listed. If you focus on one denomination there are much better guides. IMHO

Amida17:
Thank you for the info. On the CPG and the fact that it only deals with varieties.I do see on the CONECA website, an organization I recently joined, a master listing for varieties.
Amida, is there then a book listing errors (cuds, off centers, die breaks, off planchets, de-laminations, etc.) and pricing range, or is the error field less standardized than the variety field and therefore an open range when it comes to pricing?
Thanks again and have a Happy New Year.

I know little of errors. Many here will be better able to help. Seems to me errors are one of items. There are, I'm sure lists of types of errors and how they occur but it's not my bag...

All you need is to find one good variety in circulation and The Cherry Pickers Guide will have paid for itself (multiple times over in many cases)... Without my C/P Guide, I never would have known my $35.00 coin was valued at $500.00 with its variety.

I'm not sure if it has a cataloging system but if you want a book that covers errors and not varieties I would try The Error Coin Encyclopedia by Arnold Margolis. It is out of print and difficult to locate but there are at least six copies available online at the moment at prices ranging from $25 for a 1994 edition up to $125 for a 2000 edition. Four of the six are over $70. (Note I have no financial interest in any of these books for sale.)

Kopper Ken, would it not be important to see an example of the variety in question in order to verify what you may have? I would think so. If it is to you, how good can the CONECA site be? I mean, yes, there is a ton of info, but so few pictures. Cherrypicker's Guide is for the cream of the crop in varieties, but as you can tell by looking at the CONECA website, there are tons of varieties that never make it in the CPG. Also CONECA never talks about values. So how will you know how much something is worth? I collect only Lincoln Cent varieties. I use a combination of sources, but without a doubt the best thing I use is coppercoins.com Thousands of varieties, with several full color photos of each variety and it's die markers. When I put my varieties in flips, I list on the back the CopperCoins #, the CONECA#, and the CPG#. I printed out labels with blank spaces to put the numbers on. I also use a small close up photo on the variety itself and use that as the insert inside the flip with my numbering system stick on the back of it. CONECA is a good tool for info, but coppercoins and CPG are the best tools I will ever use.

Since the original question is in reference to errors, the answer is that there is no numbering system because errors are unique to each coin.Varieties are repeated. The best error reference I've used is here http://error-ref.com/index.html
