Went for groceries today and checked the Coinstar as soon as I entered the supermarket: Found a 1946 and a 1961 D Roosevelt dime. I'm taking it as a good omen, a sign that I am doing the right things lately.
But, why is the general public so dumb about silver coins?

Yogurt, you should. I've scored 4 Roosevelts in 8 months and I've checked the machines maybe twenty times. I should check them more often, too.

Most people do not care what the coin is made of and the fact that it has been almost 50 years since dimes were last made of silver.

The other question, is why don't they even check the reject slot since in this case, someone left 20 cents behind from the coins they wanted to dump.

Wish I was that lucky. The most I've found so far are a couple of dirty pennies-post 1959 at that.

Good point, kena. Makes you wonder if people even know what they're about at times.
Don't give up, parapet.

This afternoon I found a 46 Roosevelt dime and a 27 Lincoln Cent in the Coinstar at my local grocery store:

Nice finds. Stuff like this makes me homesick for the US since old in UK circulation would be a 1971 1 pence or 2 pence coin.

Kena, I'm with you. I've picked a couple Roosevelts out of the coinstars, but being in the UK, I just don't get those freebees. Antique stores are about the best locale for any US.

Coinstar again! Don't people need money? Hit Coinstar at Walmart this morning--ten quarters, nine in the return slot and one in the tray. One was a bicentennial. I love those. But how do people leave money in the machine? Aren't they going there because they need money? Ah, the American citizen.

Thanks, stud722. I'm making it a practice of checking them anytime I'm driving near one. Seems like people are still cashing in for dollars. Sign of the times.
