This gold coin was obtained while in Lebanon.
It measures roughly 3.5cm in diameter.

Lebanon has a big reputation for putting out counterfeit gold coins.

It's gold, may be commemorative, and was purchased about 35 years ago.

I believe that this statement reflects a cultural misunderstanding. In the middle east many people buy gold usually in a recognizable form ie: coins. If the genuine article isn't available then Jewelers will make one. It isn't counterfeiting as we understand the word.

The locally made coins are 21 Kt rather than 22 KT and many countries in that region ( one example is Jordan) require that the coins are counter-marked to identify them. When you buy them the seller will quite openly state they are locally made. They will identify( when they have the knowledge) genuine coins.

The only deliberate counterfeiting I know of from Lebanon was the Gothic crown and that was "requested" by a European. I can't see any counter mark on this coin and if it was sold as genuine in Lebanon then there is a very good chance that it is genuine.

The design is that of the 500 kurush of Ottoman Turkey, dated 1327//4 (AD 1912). NGC database page. Note the weight given there is incorrect; it should weigh 36.0799 grams.

I suspect it may be a jeweller's replica which means, as others have said, that it is still genuine solid gold - just not a genuine 100 year old coin.
