I've been a collector for a little over a year or so and wanted to get peoples opinions on type coins. I love 3 cent silvers and Half Cents. Because I think they are beautiful and they are relatively rare( or very rare) to their prices. Old time collectors have told me not to really collect these for the long haul as what is popular has stayed popular. Wheat pennies, Indians, Morgans, buffaloes, Commems etc.?

Do you all agree with this. I know price is a product of demands and certain coins just don't have it while others do. Look at the Flying eagle which had 20M minted compared to 1M or less for 3 cent silvers and yet are basically the same price per grade. Do you think one day certain types of coins will ever catch fire or that how it is now is likely how it will be in 20-30-40 years?

Certain series have avid followers and are very popular. I'm not sure that will change anytime soon.

My suggestion would be to collect what you like! It makes this hobby much more satisfying in the long run.

I always say learn what you love and collect that if you want to collect.

FYI my absolute passion is 3 cent nickels. Next is a tie for 3 cent silvers and 2 cent pieces. And I have yet to part with a coin unless I was giving it to someone as a gift.

So my question would be do you want to collect or do you wish to view this as a money making opportunity? These are two different goals and would be managed in two different manners.

i find most people are drawn into or become aware of "collecting" as a hobby due to only Morgans and wheats and Buffalo but for those that explore deeper, they might find a type, or several, and that drives the market all around

buy, enjoy, keep or sell, break even, make a dollar, lose a dollar...when you look back on it did you enjoy the ride? that's going to be the question for any one of us

but, gun to head on long term financial aspirations on any one coin? look at the history of the market and its trends, the information is available...plug it all into excel, apply a few algorithmic based formulas and make some assumptions based on the historical data of the past 30 years alone...that will tell you what not only your 3 cent versus flying will be, it might tell you where your best type-coin investments lay...if you cant do the excel thing, look for a template related to other commodity based trading and utilize those using coin information

About five years ago we witnessed the end of what was likely the deepest, broadest and longest lasting bull market in coins. During this time there were many series that were left behind on a relative basis and quite a few of these series were pieces that were already viewed as "undervalued" or "sleepers". Three-cent coinage would be among that group while half-cents would not be included. In my opinion, if a series has been largely ignored for decades prior to a massive bull run, and was then left even farther behind after the run, then that suggests the series is not going to have its day in the sun.

If I were you I would collect what I liked. If you are looking at investing then that's another subject.
