Hi guys,
So we decide to get wedding bands today. We walk into the shop and go through our choices. We decide on platinum bands. The salesman tells us it's roughly 2 to 2.5 times the price of gold. We shop around and find this is the case everywhere ; that platinum is much much more expensive than gold. I go home to check the current prices on the web, and see gold is more expensive than platinum. Obviously I am missing something?!

These jewelers are not trying rip you (at least on Pt jewelry being 2.5X the cost of Au).

Jewelery is kind of a different animal when it comes to pricing, I assume platinum is a harder metal to work with increasing the cost. I do like the choice though

Great article BH1964. I never thought of the purity angle (95% for platinum and 58% for gold). Taking the weight difference into acct as well makes the price difference reasonable.

I wondered about this before. I guess when I get married, I'll hand over my Engelhard 1/4 oz platinum bar and ask the jeweler to do something with it and make it pretty.....

It's a lot tougher to work with, tougher to polish (!), and has a much higer melting point. A good jeweller will have dedicated tools just for platinum to keep the metals separate and not cross-contaminate. It also needs specific alloy depending on whether it's constructed or cast, for example. So you have to remember that metals are an art material/resource and no artist is going to give you their time for free because lots of work goes into it.

@tripncoins: Your jeweller might take your bar, but will order his/her own stock that is already alloyed because it's a pain in the butt and not everybody has every single tool to do every single task - you have to outsource some things. It's just easier to order stock.
