So until I actually started reading through the grading section here I was checking how well you could see the vertical bands on a Merc instead of thr horizontal bands.I guess that shows the quality of coins that I had in my little box. I've started looking at every grade request on here now and I think that I'm getting a bit better. One thing that would be really great is if we could set up an online test where newbies could go through and grade bunches of coins, submit their answers and then get a grading grade.

That's a fun idea. Wouldn't be hard to copy and paste various PCGS photograde pics or thecoinspot photos, random order.

If you haven't seen those sites, they are good resources for becoming familiar with grades ( US coins). There are other such sites but these are the ones I've found most helpful.

you kind of can already do that

Step 1 - what I do on this forum is look at just about every thread in the grading section and even if I dont comment I am testing myself by guessing and comparing that to others comments

Step 2 - go to HA.com and search the exact coin the exact grade and review the high res images - does what you see in that image compare to the coin your holding or looking at on the bay or in this forum?

share your answers and thoughts on the particular thread of the coin
learn from why others feel the way they do

good luck
have fun

DS thats pretty much what I do, but this is one of the few times in life where a test could be an enoyable experience. It was just a thought.

Absit invidia

i get it, believe me, and its a great thought and if we were in the company of people who signed off on official market grade from any of the large TPGs that would make it even more interesting. And where I can solely choose to listen, trust and rely on the collective opinion here due to the collective years of forum experience(which I constantly do), any "grade" given, albeit spot on most times, is still subjective due to varying opinion hence making it debatable, hence making this hobby even more enjoyable...IMO.

i can only hope to learn the art of spotting dipped, cleaned, brushed, wiped, violated, bamboozled and hoodwinked coins. because those suckers can fool you and all of a sudden your victimized by crack-outs on the " rel="nofollow" target="_blank">http://www.

But that's where it all should be. Yes this is a community of hobbiest but making sure that people are able to collect unmolested coins and pay the value for what they ultimately that they are reasonably close to is a goal. Like I said it's just an idea I'm not saying anything crazy like you have to pass a test before becoming a member or anything. I'm just looking for more experience with grading. That way I'm not trying to grade my coins as au when they are fine at best. I love the pcgs grading pics site and have to rely on it heavily. I'm just looking for enough knowledge so that when I do get back to the states I can walk into an lcs and not be robbed.
