Heres a 1853 arrows and rays half I picked up over christmas that I wanted your opinions on.
Grade? Cleaned? I'm hoping not but now I'm thinking it might have a light cleaning...tell me I'm wrong, lol.

I'm not well informed on this series but I'm thinking VF30ish and if it was cleaned I think it was very lightly and awhile ago. Nice coin!

Yeah, the uniform and slightly washed-out color gives the impression of an old, light cleaning. However, there are no significant hairlines and overall I'd presume this is a market-acceptable coin with detail at about the VF-35 level. It might well get into a no-problem holder if submitted to a grading service (I would keep it raw if it were in my collection).

Very decent example for a circulated type set!

I'm with Jaobler on this one, VF-35 (high end for the grade), maybe an old light cleaning, but most coins from that era have had a light cleaning probably 90% or more that survive. This should not get any details grade at a TPG (not that I would send it in to one myself) nor should it devalue the coin either.

Nice addition to a collection!

I think it looks fine. There might be light hairlines on the surfaces, but these could very well be from decades of raw storage rather than a cleaning. The way the patina sits on the coin and around the devices makes me think the coin is okay.

I agree with the others. It likely has received a light cleaning long ago but is market acceptable. Nice coin!

Thanks everyone! I definitely feel better about it after everyone's comments! I mean, I liked it still, and I guess thats all that matters, but this was the only one I bought online over the holiday and was worried it had been cleaned (I'm still not the best at telling) and was worried it would get a details grade (although I'm not planning/nor was planning on sending it in) but I would know in the back of my mind and it would drive me nuts, lol, I'm OCD like that.
And I'd guessed VF-35 also, it seemed a bit better than VF-20 to me but not quite a XF. Although I'm no expert by all means, hence why I asked ya'll! But either VF-30 or 35 I'm definitely happy with it and believe I got it for a good price! I got it for a lot less than numismedia.com has it at VF-20, so I definitely did ok, although I think they have it priced a bit high..
Anyways, thanks again guys!

A very nice, and very collectable, coin with honest wear.

High VF, or maybe even low EF.

I believe I'm seeing an evidence of cleaning on the obverse :/
