China---Wang-Mang---Huo-Quan-Cash-Coin

Wang Mang Huo Quan Cash coin.

These coins were reportedly minted from the reform of Wang Mang in 14 AD. These coins were minted for a time after Wang Mang's death.

Wang Mang is regarded as a usurper of the Western Han Dynasty. Here is some history straight from Wikipedia.

Quote:
Wang Mang (Chinese: 王莽; pinyin: Wáng Măng) (c. 45 BC " 6 October 23 AD), courtesy name Jujun (巨君), was a Han Dynasty official who seized the throne from the Liu family and founded the Xin (or Hsin, meaning "new") Dynasty (-朝), ruling AD 9"23. The Han dynasty was restored after his overthrow and his rule marks the separation between the Western Han Dynasty (before Xin) and Eastern Han Dynasty (after Xin). Some historians have traditionally viewed Wang as a usurper, while others have portrayed him as a visionary and selfless social reformer. Though a learned Confucian scholar who sought to implement the harmonious society he saw in the classics, his efforts ended in chaos.

I don't mean to be a snob, but for whatever reason I do not have any interest in Asian coins. Perhaps, like I've said before, it's because of my European heritage? I dunno.

I am definitely branching out a bit in the ancient Coin World. I was completely in the dark as well about Chinese coins until I started doing a lot of reading. No, that doesn't make me an expert but I at least have half a clue what I'm doing. lol

Chinese
Judaean
Carthage
Islamic

Those are just some sub-collections I've decided to do. I am definitely sticking with Romans as my main interest. I am of European as well as Native American descent. Not sure if that has anything to do with having an interest in any particular coins. But I'll be honest, I have less of a interest in India region coins, although there are maybe two or three that I'm interested in.

I have one more China coin to post and that will be it for awhile. I hope you guys enjoyed my 50th Roman Ruler celebration. I know I have. lol

Bing...
Most Europeans have some Asian heritage... especially if their ancestors were located near the Asian borders (Really... anything located half way throught Germania, down to the dotted line through the Adriatic sea was located close enough)

Based on this map: http://rbedrosian.com/Maps/sh29_44.htm

I'm as European as they get...
And I have some Asian ancestry

Family history is Celtic (British and French, but mostly British), Roman (Yes... from the area around Rome... that moved to the province of Britannia) and Gothic (the northern kind, of course)....
Later, my family was British... I know a name from my family (believed to be a direct ancestor) from over a millenia ago...

Thanks anoob, interesting article. But it doesn't change my mind. I can barely trace my mongrel blood back into the 19th Century, but it's rather obvious the history of my family is European. I love the histories of ancient Greece and Rome, and really can get into the medieval European history. Perhaps if I knew anything about Asian history/culture other than my military association with Asia, I might find Asian coins of interest. But alas, "I am what I am and that's all that I am" as Popeye would say.

For those just entering the fascinating world of ancient coins from Asian countries you may find this link of value:- http://chinesecoins.lyq.dk/eBaydealers.html

I have dealt with both Song Min (lindascoin) in China and Ricky Watt (wattwatt) in Hong Kong with confidence and satisfaction on many occasions.

Interesting discussion. My family and its history is South American but I know it ultimately leads back to Spain, so I can safely say I am of European descent, but aside from giving me another reason to really like coins of Magnus Maximus (he was a Spaniard) and have a bit of a soft spot for Spanish coins (even though I don't actively collect them), my background doesn't really affect my collecting. What influences me more in what I collect are the coin style and history of the culture.

Same here Gil-galad, I'm not into Indian coins as well. The closest thing to them that I am semi-interested in are Indo-Greek and Bactrian coins. Want to get at least one soon.

I like this one the most of the old Chinese coins you have recently posted.

One drawback that a lot of people notice with cash coins is that the characters are difficult to interpret or boring or just plain too foreign to be interesting.

With this coin, the characters are intriguing or outright bizarre. . .

I like the style of the characters on the Wang Mang coins as well. You're right though, many of them look the same unless you become somewhat familiar with the Chinese characters. Which is why I'm not going to collect too many of them. Just a few of them that look unique such as this coin.

I'm glad you like the coin.

Bad news. The dealer told me that one of the coins was already sold and had been re-listed by mistake when VCoins upgraded. It's probably one of the $6 coins because that's what the refund was. He didn't even contact me in advance to replace the coin with something else. I emailed him asking him which one. Usually, he doesn't answer emails.

I just hope this isn't the coin that isn't coming.
