So I was looking around at Craigslist last night and seen a guy locally selling wheat rolls un searched. I called him and he said he purchased 2 barrels of pennies from a family that there grandfather who passed away in 1962 had put away. He promised that he had not searched them and that there was all different kinds of wheats. He said even some un circulated pennies. So this is what I found. P.S. I paid $6 per roll and purchased 4 rolls. He is also selling bags for $275. (Edit: Guy who I purchased from was a dealer who had choice and graded pennies for sale)

If you are happy with that deal that's all that matters. I think you did great!

At least you got an IHC in there. I would still rather save up and buy what I'm looking for...

Sounds like you did ok - esp with those uncirculated ones.

The thing I don't understand is how they can advertised unsearched wheat rolls. How do they know there aren't LMCs in there also? I could see that in 1959 or shortly after. Good lord it has been 50+ years since they stopped minting them. I would assume any roll that has been sitting around has been searched at some point.

I just bought over 2,800 wheats - over 56 rolls worth - paid face value at the bank. I consider them unsearched, by me that is. That's my definition of unsearched, and I'm stickin to it.

His reasoning is the guy died 1962 so nothing had been added since then and all he collected was wheat pennies. Sounds like a good story. The guy also handed me a sheet full of rare or high grade pennies for sale. Sounds like he just pulled all the good stuff and left the common things and sales them.

yogurt, I'd say the info about having the valuable cents for sale would be important knowledge about this deal". You need to edit your original post and add that bit of information as it is very pertinent to the purchase.

With that said, if you purchased, knowing this information, and you're happy, then it's a good purchase. It doesn't really matter what others would do. For me, the idea or purchasing individual coins doesn't interest me but it obviously interests many others. I guess if you're a true collector, it's the only way to complete a set. The thrill of the chase is what most of us CRHers are looking for.

Yogurt, I'd say there's maybe a 2% chance that those weren't searched "to his knowledge". Either by him, by the original owner, a friend, family member, or someone else who was tasked with pulling key dates and better conditioned coins on lower mintage years.

In the interest of full disclosure, I am a natural pessimist ;)

I wouldn't buy anymore with the expectation of finding anything better than you did this go round. If you are happy with what you got for what you paid then go for it.
