We have had an accumulation of old US coin for thirty some years. Some of these would probably be considered interesting and likely have some numismatic value. Then there is a group of 183 pennies in circualated condition with dates ranging from 1940 to 1969. These are from the Philadelphia and Denver mints. What is the liklihood that this group of coins is worth more than $1.83?

to CCF!

183 pennies from that date range is about a pound and a quarter in weight. This equals about $4.56 in copper bullion value.

OR

As John1 said check http://www.numismedia.com/fmv/fmv.shtml

OR

If you check for double dies, errors and the like, you may be surprised or not. Take the time to thoroughly examine your collection. This is how we hobbyist gain knowledge, value and find the elusive 1943 copper penny !

Good luck !

Like mentioned the coppers worth more than the 1.83, it more than likely has a numismatic value over that as well whether or not that is more than the copper value will depend on whats in the group

Just one 1955 Doubled Die Penny would make it all worth while looking.

The odds of it being worth more than $1.83 (or basal value) is probably lower than 1: 200.

Of course this is assuming that you would have mentioned obvious errors like blank planchets.

There is a higher probability of finding interesting varieties which can list for several dollars but these are typically hard to sell and will require some training to spot. If any of the coins are mint condition it might be worth looking for Gems but typically unless they're all mint or nearly allmint there won't be any high grades either.

It's a wonderful hobby and you might benefit greatly by learning more about it but the odds of valuable coins in this kind of accumulation are very poor.
Time don't fly, it bounds and leaps.

The pennies from 1940-1958 are wheat cents and can be sold to a dealer for 2 cents a piece. Their retail is like 3 or 4 cents a piece. People do save copper pennies before 1982 but it is currently illegal to melt these so there is no way to use the copper in these pennies so their copper isn't worth anything. People actually buy these on ebay.
