Hi again,

I thought I'd get the wisdom of the forum to see if these three Morgans I just got are cleaned. I think they might be. If they are, though, it's one of the better cleaning jobs I've ever seen, though I'm not that experienced. They are all 1881S coins, so the photos just go a few of obverse 1, a few of reverse1, a few of obverse 2, etc.
There are very small lines on the coins that I couldn't really photograph but they seem to be identical to the very small lines that I see on my NGC-slabbed Morgans that are obviously legit.
These coins came in the mail and they almost seem too good and too clean. At the same time, the mint luster, in many of the photos, seems to be real. And, they don't like like most polished or otherwise cleaned coins I have seen.
Long story short, if they're cleaned, I've lost a bit of money but not a lot (with the silver value.) If they're real, I got one incredible deal. I'll hold my breath as you chime in!

Thanks for your opinions,
Derek

They honestly look fine to me. I think they are proof like. Unless that is some kind of cleaning. The lines are either just hairline scratches from being tossed around or die scratches. Lets see what others say. But I dont think they were cleaned

Good to hear rachums107. That was my initial impression. Then they came and looked a little "too clean." If you, and anyone else responding, think they're good, what grade would you give them? They cheeks seem relative clean, compared to a lot of Morgans.

Thanks again,
Derek

I'm no pro either but they look good to me. Try doing the "cartwheel" effect on them (it looks like I can kind of see it without moving it).

I know when I cleaned one of my Morgans, the "cartwheel" disappeared and the dealers could immediately spot it.

I'll express an opinion tomorrow when I see these on a 27" monitor instead of a 5" one.

First pic scared me, but latter ones make me think that they are truly beautiful and PL in appearance, good buy IMO.

Look like original surfaces to me. Definitely something MS I would guess. Very nice pick-ups.

There are vertical hairlines visible in some of the obverse images. These are die polishing artifacts, part of the coin and relatively common on 1881-S Morgans. Not to be worried about.

However, on a couple images I can see faint horizontal hairlines. These worry me more, but I'm thinking they are incidental to a scrape rather than deliberate cleaning. The coin(s) are too "clean," which is to say there's none of the telltale color or crud left in tight areas which indicate that the con has been deliberately brushed.

The 4th and 8th images (from the top) are a little off, but I believe that was deliberate on your part to vary lighting and technique to show different features.

There isn't (to my mind) an image of anything but nice Mint State 1881-S Morgans here. If you got these for melt or close, you did well indeed.

Glad to hear they've passed the test! Does anybody want to wager a grade for them? Compared to the rest of my Morgans, the cheeks are pretty clean. Do you think any could get an MS 65?

I'd say all three are good enough to call MS65. The only thing that could drop these below that from a TPG is the expectation of a 1881-S. These tend to be held to a slightly higher standard because of the population of high end examples.

Very nice MS coins there! I see nothing to say anything less than 64, and might well go 65. Those are some very nice coins. As Dave said, if you paid in the neighborhood of melt, you got a really good deal.
