Hello friends, I think this coin doesn't even qualify as a bottom feeder buy, but how could I resist. I won it on ebay for $1.04 and free shipping and was hoping to clean it up a bit. Can anyone provide some insight as to what exactly is going on with this coin. Silver washed? plated? corroded? Thanks in advance!!

Any attempt to clean this coin would probably make it worse, So I would just leave it as it is. It still has some silvering left which is a plus and the emperor can be IDed so for $1.04 you did OK.

Nothing more to clean off from the coin, Kurt, it is rare to find Silver plating/Silvering on Antoninianii from the reign of Probus, a great catch!

I have coins with similar problems. The silvering remains on the flat areas but has been destroyed on most of the higher points. It would appear that the silvering was destroyed during mechanical cleaning. There is nothing left to clean and all you will do by cleaning further will be to further destabilise the remaining silvering. Here is one of mine with similar issues. Regards, Martin
