hi I have a 1981 cent that looks the same as yours I believe its PMD..i was told if you get a rool of pennies and stock them with other rolls on top after a while you get this effect on some coins,,don't no if it is true or not,,,

Hi eddio, I do not agree with you, But I'd like to see pictures of your coins.
By doing a little cleaning with a toothpick,here are other pictures.

I believe this is post mint damage. I am not sure how it occurred, but perhaps a blow, or pressure, was applied to the effigy to cause it to indent slightly relative to the adjacent fields.

I cannot tell for sure from your photos, but this looks like a coin from an obverse die that I catalogued as O2U-A9. If that is true, then I have other coins from that die without the damage.

Is there such a thing as ejection doubling on victorian cents? Because if it's not PMD, that's all I can see as a possible answer. Although PMD is quite possible as well.
