Hello! I apologise in advance if this is a silly question with an obvious answer however I will ask it anyway. With the 1871 IHC having a mintage of 3,929,500 and the 1872 have a mintage of of 4,042,000 why is it that the 1872 IHC tends to be more valuable/desirable than that of 1871 with a lower mintage?

For all practical purposes the mintages for both 1871 and 1872 were the same. However, the 1872 IHC is the 2nd most difficult date to find, esp. in higher grades. Poor planchet quality and striking problems resulted in most 1872's being of poor quality and makes it difficult to find problem free coins. Also, the Mint Act of 1871 resulted in many newly minted coins to be melted. This also affected the 1871 IHC as well, but not as greatly as the 1872. So the 1872 is more expensive in all grades.
