Makes me sad too. I love posting pictures but I had a member send me a PM with my name address, everything. I think I solved the problem disabling the GPS on my phone but who knows if that is enough. I just thank god that know one besides the wife and kids knows where my bomb shelter is. I never took a picture from there so that's where I moved my whole hoard. :(
I almost wish this was a pay mer month site so we could eliminated the rift raft. Or maybe just make the PM section open to members with 250 posts and 6 months on the site.
Just my opinion Mods please do not ding me for it.

@tbk---I hear what you're saying, but--if there are any bad dogs out there trolling for targets--setting participation prerequisites or charging a monthly fee would only make the PM forum a thousand times more noteworthy and attractive to any such bad dogs, so those ideas would probably be self-defeating.

Phone geotagging is really annoying. Could always just use a nice cheap didgital camera that you know doesn't have gps.
The odds are small that anything will come of it. Especially if you happen to live in a smaller town or away from heavily populated areas. Still eye opening though.

TBK - Dont let it stop you posting! We all want to see your stack. Just be cautious - regular cameras shouldnt do anything. And you've got the best protection methods around here - you're safe as it gets. Anyone who tries to do any reading into it will realise there no reason to try it.

Don't stop posting pictures TBK! Use a cheap Point and Shoot for Pictures... No one can find out then (unless you show pictures of maps and signs)!

I wonder how many people on here that use IPhones know about the potential security risks involved. I would wager not many, perhaps someone should start a topic in the main discussion forum.
Most older digital cameras do not have geotagging capabilities but most more expensive/newer smartphones and cameras do. I posted a New York Times article about it in the photography section a few months ago.

OK - I don't have a fancy phone that takes pictures, but I do have a new Canon PowerShot SX160 IS digital camera. I've looked and looked through the instruction book, but don't see anything about GPS. Does anyone know anything about this camera? Completely illiterate here.

I don't think that PowerShot camera has GPS.

Quote: Those holes are useless though, what can you put over the top to make it look inconspicuous? For long-term storage that you don't need to get in and out of, you could try filling the hole about 90% full of packing peanuts and then putting about 2" of concrete on top. Only you will know what is below that new 'crete and it is easily bashed out with a hammer when you do need to get into your hoard. Until then, it is pretty much invisible. It could also be covered with a rug and a piece of furniture of some kind. Not perfect but then what is?

My photos carry a Geotag according to where they're saved on my PC (don't believe Geotag gets uploaded onto Flickr) but the coordinates the picture on my desktop gives put the picture about 30 miles away from where I live. Not it is very impressive that the camera could be so accurate, but it's not like the thing can pinpoint my house or something. Only about 80,000 people live within that 30 mile radius. I like my chances.
TBK - please don't stop posting pictures, someone could track you down a heck of a lot easier off your name from your email than your pictures. Just sayin.

well sorry to hear that TBK.
When I started a thread on that subject of everyone showing their stuff, I had genuine concern for everyone and I respected everyone's desire to show stuff.
I would hate to hear and cringe when I hear or ready about any sort of robbery and thefts... especially when you ready in the paper that it was a seniors home.. and they got cleaned out that's sad.
i can just imagine the devastation many wold have having their many years of hard work of coins no matter what they have, to be taken away from them ...

I should also like to say that I talked about "risk management". I am trained in that and have gone down the list including legal matters, and social media and tagging as described earlier. I wish I had mentioned it first thing :/
Please everyone, please be careful with who you tell and leave as little details as possible regarding your coins.

Can you find it? OK, I was just pulling your legs. I had to install a sump pump for a customer & as we were clearing out the area, I came across some ammo boxes & couldn't resist the opportunity.
