I have a 1981 nickel that has a rim line or punch most of the way around the inside of the obverse. I really don't know what to call it.

It goes all the way through most of the coin. You can really see it in the "In God" and again in the Liberty and date.

Hopefully it looks OK...I ran it through the optimizer.

Can anyone shed some light on what this is?

Thank you.

Dave

Because the circumferential line inside the rim is depressed, the possibility of post mint damage is strong.
I have seen a similar line around the face of a coin, which raised, and this case, the cause is most probably a die crack.

.Dave, what I'm seeing is a "counter swirl", for lack of a better term. Hope someone proves me wrong.

I agree with John1. I just see damage. A wrapping/counter machine is a possibility.
