Over Christmas, whilst buying the Diocletian Abdication Half Follis posted elsewhere I also bough the following coin:-

Commodus BI Tetradrachm
Obv:â€" MA KO ANTW CEB EVCEB, Laureate head right
Rev:â€" Bust of Nilus right, with cornucopia over shoulder, K/L | D
Minted in Alexandria (Year 24) in A.D. 183/4
Reference:â€" Milne 2561

Commodus-Billon-Tetradrachm

I am constantly on the lookout for an Alexandrian denrius of Commodus and have been for many years. These are unfortunately rare and I also wanted a billon tet of Commodus for stylistic comparison. The Billon Tets are relatively common but the denarii are sufficiently rare that the only chance I have of getting one is to spot one mis-attributed somwehere. In the mean time I have finally bought the tet I intend to use for comparison.

Very nice, does Year 24 refer to the age of the mint at this point

Alexandrian tets typically have the regnal year represented on them. In this case the regnal year is K D, where K = 20 and D = 4 making year 24. The complexity comes with the continuity in this case of the years of Marcus Aurelius. Coins of Aurelius are dated through to Year 20 and Commodus coins start at year 21.

I see, interesting, more of a family or house reign rather than a single Emperors reign, thanks
