Hi, can anyone identify which variety 1897 5 cent this is? What's the easiest way to tell on these?

Welcome to CCF Canada... :)

Picture is not the best to determine for sure, but it appears to me that your coin is the "narrow 8" variety... the "wide 8" has more elptical shape to it...

Looks like about an EF-40 grade... Canadian Coin News "Trends" lists value at $50...

If you're going to be collecting Canada coins it might be a good idea to have a Charlton Catalogue of Canadian Coins for reference material... lots of photos to help identify varieties...

Just keep in mind that the prices in Charlton are not always in line with current "Trends" of the market...
