I have had this quarter hanging around for quite a while. I removed it from a proof like set because it seemed not perfect. I can assure you the surface marks are not from circulation as it is uncirculated. All the little dots all over the surface that kind of look like dust are actually raised specs of metal.

I would love some opinions on this quarter please and thanks.

That's pretty surprising for a PL set coin...just what are those bumps?
If it were an older strike in otherwise great shape, I might guess a rust-pitted die.
But there might be something totally else at work...die wear?
"CENTS" looks struck by an old typewriter, lol.

Im not sure what happened to it either. It is hard to really make a guess because there is just so much going on.

My one clue as to wear are those little bumps around the outer beads.
They seem to follow an outward direction with the force of strike pressure.
That's consistent with die wear, but some of the other bumps are just weird.

Maybe you could get this when they made the die. I understand they begin with soft metal and then harden it. If you stamped the soft metal when you had some small granular substance (I was thinking silicon carbide grit) on the original, could it make a die with this sort of error?

The thing about silicon carbide grit is that it is very angular, very sharp, as are some of the indentations in the die here. It's used for various grinding operations and it would be something I'd expect to find in a mint.

Hi all, this is my 1st post on this forum!

malissadawn, the spots on your coin are quite common on both 1999 & 2000 quarter series. So far, we've been calling those "metal accumulations".
You will see a lot of such accumulations on plated coins (since 2000/2001; "P" or Mint mark -a circle with an "M" in it- under the queen).

To my opinion, the most interesting error on your coin is the die crack between the "CANADA" and the train. Not a rare coin, but a nice example of what a die crack looks like.
The "jug shape" die chip is an interesting one to look for on the 2000 ingenuity quarter.

I would say to you- think backwards. The dots are raised on the coin, which means that they are sunk into the die. I would suspect that they are the products of an aging die, that is starting to loose the plating on the die. They are spread out towards the edges, which would make me think that metal flow has something to do with it, especially the longer dies. I am also beginning to suspect that proof-like dies are treated with some chemicals/ substances that will change the surface of the coins- PL dimes have a different finish on the sails and water than the finish on other denominations, for instance. These are just theories , at the moment, as I have not been able to get any replies to my queries to the mint.

After reading this post, I went through my pocket change & found this 2000 Canadian quarter with a few of the same errors...

It weights 5.1grams....

Is this the silver issue?
