Multi-year, multi-mint series are always hurt a bit by the fact that only one example of the series is required to put together the more common 50 coin set. So, it's easy to be mislead by the low mintages of certain issues like the Cincy or some of the Booker and Carvers and misread potential demand.

Having said that, perhaps no series in the Commemorative series has been more maligned over the years than the Booker T., an historic and, to my taste, an attractive coin.

This 65+ graded example is a reasonable buy at about $100. My Booker T set contains toners and brilliant examples with 65+ and 66 being my preferred grade/price point.

If you'd like to get a Booker T., exercise some patience and go for a lower mintage year- unless the coin is stunning and/ or beautifully colored.

Very nice coin â€" lots of eye appeal!

I agree that the history behind the BTW coin is solid and worthy of commemoration, but it has never been among my favorites in terms of its design. The spacing of the various design elements and inscriptions has always struck me as unbalanced.

I certainly agree with your position on the design. I think it takes some growth to like- and it certainly isn't one of the better artistic pieces of the series. that being said, they honestly will not make coins like this in the modern era. they have a completely different approach to basining and the coin typifies the classic hand lettering- something I love in a coin.

I find, for whatever reason, my experience has been that the 49s come nicer than the 48s... but I just wanted to share this one.

Gorgeous example cc.

While I can certainly appreciate the visual beauty of your coin ... I tend to agree with commems that the overall design of the BTW is to my less appealing than other classic silver commemorative.

I could see myself putting together a 14-coin date/mm subset of the Oregon Trail Half ... but not the BTW.

None of that personal preference however detracts from the beauty of this lower mintage example.

Great food for thought.

I really enjoy when commemorative folks add their knowledge and experience when posting these coins

Yes, a very disappointing issue. As stated already, the coin is unbalanced, hastily designed, especially the reverse. It's a shame on several levels.

cc9999: I was hasty in my post this morning--still drinking my first cup of coffee. I failed to say that I like your coin. You have a very nice example of it and I do like the portrait on this coin. I think it is worth owning. Good luck to you. (I'm currently keeping my eye out for a MS65 Stone Mountain and, maybe, an MS65 San Diego if that comes my way first. But, of course, such an expenditure will slow down my pursuit of other coins.)

Well, I don't think the series is a shame or a failure. but each of us likes what we like. after I finish picking up the entire run of booker t and carvers, I'm going to move on to the Arkansas series. I think I've seen enough of them to know what I like and what I want to avoid. The only carver I have left to find is an MS-65 or MS-65+ 1951-P. I'd like to upgrade my 1950-S Booker, but I haven't found the right coin yet.
