ENGLAND James I (1603-1625) AR Shilling 5.92g Obv: IACOBVS D G MAG BRI FRA ET HI REX, Bust right Rev: QVAE DEVS CONIVNXIT NEMO SEPARET (Matthew 19-6), Shield of arms mm: Lis, 1623-24 Third coinage 6th bust, north 2124 gF, Flan flaws Ex: Davissons, Auct. 27 June 2008 #143 Spink 2668 Steven W. Damron, Numis. Got this coin at the 2013 FUN Show (Florida United Numismatists) This coin is sort of out of my area of expertise as I collect milled English coins (late 17th century-18th century). I know it has "flan flaws" but is it still a nice example? Any info about this coin would be appreciated. Thanks.      Edited by EarlyMilledCoins

Isn't that a pretty thing! There's some subtle measure of beauty that was lost when they went from the hammer to the press.

Yes it is and I agree! I don't know much about the hammered coins as I mainly collect late 17th/18th century milled coins but I am starting to get into hammered. This is the second hammered coin I've purchased; the first being an Edward I Bristol Mint penny. What does the "Lis" mean in regards to the mint mark on this particular coin and what are some good reference guides (websites/books) for hammered coinage?

The "lis" is a fleur-de-lys. Yours appears just before IACOBUS. Indicates the Tower Mint, 1604-5 and 1623-4 on these coins.

Oh wow! Thanks for the info. So what would you say the grade is for this coin. Do you agree with the gF grade (which I think is good fine?) or would you say it's something else?

In the gF-gVF range.
I would say aVF but I'm not sure how much to subtract for clipping etc.
