Hi.

First of all thank you for this great forum. It is really interesting to learn so much about coins and their history.
I have a 1847 one cent coin and I would like to know if is it worth to send it to a grading service. :)
What do you think? How will it be graded?
Thanks a lot.
I have set the brightness higher.

Welcome to the forum Dark Sun.

That is a nice looking coin. I'm not too familiar with grading early cents. Some of our members have a great deal of knowledge on early cents and could help you out a lot more than I could. As for grading services, if you really want to send it to one, use either PCGS or NCG, they are reputable.

I am far from a good grader, I am still trying to learn. So I could be a long way out here. I'll put my neck on the line and say VF-35.
There appears to be a few knocks on the Obverse and wear on "LIBERTY". Maybe verdigris on the reverse. Still a nice coin though.

I would put it at EF-40 but with problems. The problems are on the reverse. There is verdigris (the green stuff) and over time will eat into the coin more and more. There is also, from this pic, something going on above the word ONE. Don't know if that is just the pic or someones past attempt at hiding a scratch. It hasn't been done recently though. With that said and not having the coin in hand, the value on the coin itself is around $60.oo. Fee for grading approximately $30 and you would need to get the green stuff off through conservation and I am sure there is a charge for that also. So if you want to pay the fees which will be more than 50% of the coin then that would be your choice. If I were a huge large cent collector it might be worth it to me. However, with all that said, with or without the conservation they may still body bag it and send it back. By body bag I mean they will just put it back in the flip for you and not slab it because it doesn't meet their minimum requirements for slabbing. NGC and PCGS are usually the ones who body bag. Someone can correct me if I am wrong but I think ANACS will slab it. Those 3 services along with ICG are the only ones I would consider sending it to. The rest of them are worthless. The green stuff is your biggest problem right now though.

1) Welcome to the forum, DarkSun. It's a pleasure to have you among us.

2) Great pictures. You've obviously got coin photography figured out.

3) In my opinion, your Cent will grade EF45-ish from a TPG. I am somewhat concerned about the obverse scratches; that may cause a no-grade or, in the case of ANACS, a Net grade. That would make the retail value of this coin somewhere around $75 - your decision whether or not to slab it should take the value and the risk of bodybagging into consideration.

Here's a similar coin, formerly in my collection, which graded AU55 from ANACS:
