Imagine my shock when I pulled this thing from a roll. It is weakly magnetic and noticeably heavier. Was this done to scam collectors? Does it have any value either way?

Not a fake, plated. I have one from 1958. I wouldn't pay a premium for it, but they are kinda cool. On another note . . . I must ask: Are you the Modern Man?

Hello,
From the color shade of the coin it appears that the plating solution may had been comprised of a solution with components more weighted toward Zn(zinc)ion saturation.
IMO

Wow, it's funny that you posted this. I have the same exact thing posted with a 1958D with lincoln smoking a cigar! I guess they are more common than I imagine! :)

I have a 1941 Lincoln that is chrome/nickel plated and it too is slightly magnetic. It's the plating that has slightly ferrous properties and this adds the extra weight.

Although they may be "noticeably heavier", if you actually weigh them you will probably find that they are still within mint tolerances. the odd color and wishful thinking tends to fool people into thinking they are heavier or lighter than they really are. (It is amazing how many plated 1974 cents get reported as being "much lighter than a normal cent" because they are hoping to find an aluminum one. An aluminum cent weighs about 1 grams, but when we can finally get the people to actually weigh their coins they tend to come in at 3.1 to 3.2 grams, HEAVIER than the normal cent, not "much lighter".)
This is why when it comes to any kind of a possible off metal error I always harp on What does it weigh? I'm not interested in a comparison, or what or "seems" to the owner, I want an actual weight in grams preferably to two decimal places. I've never known a good set of electronic scales to engage in "wishful thinking".

They sure stand out in a roll. More chrome-like. Got this months ago, same box as the smokin' Abe.

And remember that weighing a worn coin will get you a weight of less than a unworn one. So a thin plating could well bring it back to it's original weight. OR you found a coin made by a secret branch of the government where they make their own pay checkes in coins.
