I pulled this coin out of a roll the other day and it looks like the mint mark is a S with a E stamped over it pointing to the northwest under 60x maagnification. any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

It appears to be either PMD, or just a well placed Die Chip

Quote:It appears to be either PMD, or just a well placed Die Chip I'm guessing the later. If there is an E or any other overmark, I don't see it in your photos.

It is a damaged D mintmark, only proofs of that year will have an S mintmark.

I'm going with die chip. Small die chip or PMD, both not worth any big premium.

Yes, it is possible to find proofs in circulation from someone breaking open a Proof Set and spending the coins but this 1979 is without a doubt a business strike.

Thanks for all the help everyone. I cant get a bigger scan so I will take it as a damaged mint mark and go from there.
