Hi Folks Just trying to get some grading opinions on this 1857 dime. Looks like some damage on the first A in America, and some damage on the first S in states. Any opinions would be appreciated.

VF-20 details, appears to have some environment issues.

Thanks. Since it already seems to have been cleaned dipping it won't effect it.

i agree with VF details
looks like an F111 obverse, high bold date with a downward slope although this could be a later die state as that might be erosion on the obverse shield as well as very weak devices on the reverse with a die crack...i don't see any reported later die states that exhibit these details on the F111...i do see erosion and die cracks due to later die states on the F109a...who knows, maybe you discovered a new variety...
I'm not 100% sure but that's my guess for now interesting coin

Don't dip that coin! Never dip a coin below AU condition, you have nothing to gain.

Quote: dipping it won't effect it. I disagree. It has a semi-original looking patina right now; I believe there's still a chance to ruin it further, and I believe that dipping it will prove me right on that point. Question: on the reverse, I see what looks like a die crack running between the TA of STATES. To me, it looks like that crack is serious-enough to have affected the strike of the T, indicating a displaced field in that area. This would be a definite feature of interest should it be true. However, it could just be a function of the changes in coloration and the quality of the images. Can you have a closer look at that area for me?

After looking at it a lot closer, there appears to be a few die cracks on the obverse and reverse of the coin. I do not see any die crack over the ta of states. Upon closer inspection it doesn't look like a hit over the t in states could it possibly be from a Grease Filled Die?

Actually looking at it closer and under natural light there appears to be a die crack there but unfortunately due to the gunk build up can't say for sure. I won't dip it, Just thought if it was a coin that had been cleaned in the past that it couldn't hurt it any further.

so this could be an F109a with the die cracks and weak reverse indicating a later die state strike plus you do have erosion on the shield
nice variety find i wish it was mine

I'm in the VF details camp as well. Still a very nice coin.
