Anyone ?

The coin appears to be one of the Key dates ,, but I have found Krause to be less than reliable for values ,,

In my eyes the coin appears to be a Higher EF to lower AU ?

Thanks

"Key date" is a bit of a misnomer for the New Zealand predecimal series - none of them are hard to find in circulated condition.

That coin may well grade EF on the American scale, but kiwis use the stricter British grading standard. I'd be reluctant to call that coin better than gVF - there's quite a bit of wear on the king's hair, there's no lustre (unless there is, and the scan isn't picking it up) and there's a couple of greenish patches, particularly around the W in New, GE in George and M in emperor.

I don't have a current NZ catalogue - my latest is 1997. I probably should buy an upgrade, with prices for kiwi coins going nuts since the reforms last year. This old catalogue has the 1942 halfpenny at NZ25¢ in "average/fine", NZ$25 in EF and NZ$100 in Unc, which is about what Krause says in the 2006 edition.

If you want to know what the Kiwis are paying for their own coins, try TradeMe - a local ebay clone.
