Is there a trick to determining weather a coin's smoothness and lack of details is the result of circulation wear vs being the result of LDS strikes?

Yes....look at thousands of coins! Seriouly though, typical LDS often coins show the outer devices drawn toward the edge of the coin. Die cracks are another indicator.
