Sorry mods if this is posted in the wrong section

What is the ideal magnification rate on loupes or other magnification devices when examining a coin for cleaning and other detail aspects?

I like using a 10x but I have heard quite a few different opinions on here. Everything from 5x to 30x. Personal preference mostly

For cleaning you'll want fairly minimal magnification, so you can see the broader aspect of the coin - I use 5x for that. You'll want no less than double that, probably more, for details like doubling and such.

Most of the time, I use a 7x loupe but if I need to get a closer examination of something, I do have a 10x and 16x handy. Like already mentioned, a lot of it is personal preference.

thanks all, my vision is 20/20 but that's because I'm young. I think I'll settle for a 10x

I used to enjoy using an electron microscope but security kept asking me: "who are you and what are you doing here?"

SsuperDdave, once again you are correct. I like using a large hand held magnifying glass for overall appearance and a 10 power loupe for a closer more detailed examination.

PS ignore spell check when it says LOUPE is spelled wrong.

I am pretty sure that TPG'S use 10 power binocular magnification to examine and grade coins. I believe that 10 power is the industry standard.
