Hello,

I got this coin recently, checked it in the jeweler and he told me it was gold. Specifications are as follows:
diameter: 34,1 mm
thickness: 2,5 mm (on highest points I believe)
weight: 33,425 g

I just wanted to make sure, because I heard that there are a lot of fakes (also made of gold). What do you think? Does the coin seem to be ok?

The 1908 No Motto Saint is very common. Your coin has close to Mint State detail with subdued luster. I see no problems with your coin but as you noted, contemporary counterfeits were common.

Since the primary value here is in the gold content, you are wise to confirm all dimensional characteristics. That's the idea behind the "fisch" tester that verifies gold coins. The fisch tells you you have gold, it obviously doesn't authenticate the coin and that's all you need to do with melt, or near melt, value pieces such as this.

Thank you for your reply. Actually it was checked by gold chloride, and gold content seems to be fine. So if the gold content is fine, and all the dimensional characteristics of the coin are correct, so it seems to be genuine.

Checking different examples of this type of coin, I found out that there is one detail, that slightly differs - the lenght of sunrays. Is it caused by the usage degree of dies, or maybe something else? Here you have the database of double eagle 1908 I am refering to: http://www.wcn.pl/archive?q=20+dolar%C3%B3w+1908

To me, the reverse WITHOUT motto looks a little top heavy in the design, relative to those WITH motto.

I'm definitely not an expert on gold coins, but if the gold content is verified, I believe your doing fine.
No real reason to fake a very common date with the real gold content.
