Hey all, any opinions on this one? Thinking about buying it but am torn. Asking price is $35.  |

cheezyfryes,  to the CCF. I was taught to always buy the best coins I could afford. Coins in lower grades will never increase in value to the amount that coins in higher grades do. With that said, I personally would hold off for a better quality coin. The 1853 is a common date coin. Higher grades are available at reasonable prices. You will end up paying more for the better grade, but you will not regret it. |

 with Dave, you can get a much nicer one for not much more $. I picked up a 1861 Thrime in AU.. At least 50, maybe higher... for $50... If you shop around and have patience (which I know can be SUPER hard, lol) then great deals can surface. But personally I'd hold off.. If your torn and asking if you should buy it then obviously it didn't appeal to you that much, don't buy it just because you need/want one... Wait until you see one that you absolutely HAVE to have and won't be able to live with yourself if you don't have... & Buy that one.. Lol. (But I would never dream about telling someone what to do.. That's strictly my opinion, but if you love the coin buy it... Just personally I'd just spend a bit more time and possibly $ and wait on one that I loved) |

Thanks for the input, and you're both right. If I had to question whether or not the grade was "good enough", that should have been a sign to me to just wait.  I think I need to re-introduce myself here, I was following this forum early last year but took a long break as we finalized an adoption from China. I'll post something in the main forum about my new efforts toward a US Type set. Thanks again! |

I agree with Nathan and Dave although I doubt if AU50 coins are readily availible for $50. Here is a NGC AU58 that I picked up a few years ago.   Edited by Joe2007

From a different perspective, I've had an 1853 trime in worse condition than the one the OP posted for most of my collecting life. I love it and like showing it off. I have a friend who uses one to spot his golf ball on the greens. For $35 that seems like a nice coin that is well struck. Here's the thing about 3C silver pieces in my opinion, the condition doesn't really improve the details of the coin THAT much and there is so much variability in strike. I mean, the shield might be a little sharper and you might get some better luster but that's about it. No offense to what the others have said but compare the details of the coin the OP posted to AU's. There's not much difference in the details but the price guides indicate the value for an 1853 in AU condition is around $125. For $35, I say go for it.

Based on the picture you posted, I'd give it a problem free grade of f15. With a better picture, this might make Vf with a weakly struck obverse as the date shows. Not a bad price for a solid coin. You could offer less if you're still on the fence and look to make a few bucks on its sale when a replacement comes along.

VF35 possibly. I would not say AU. The tone of the color is not in AU.
