Something about this one makes me think that it's wrong.

the reverse image looks like one used on a Civil War Token here in the US. I will look for the obverse design.

UPDATE - yes, found it, that was a CWT

Thanks Fuzzy. Am I right in thinking that there are restrikes of this piece? Because for some indefinable reason, this just doesn't feel right.

I do not know if there were restrikes, but they were probably made cheaply and not from the best stock. They're only a passing interest to me, but there are other users with a better understanding of CWT and their history. They should see this call for help and be along shortly.

Yes, it is indeed a CWT. There were many different die pairings... i.e., the obverse die was mated w/ other different reverse dies depending on what the customer wanted. They were minted as a replacement for the 1862/63 IHCs which were being hoarded by the general public due to the Civil War. Check out this topic

While there were many CWT's of which copies were made, the subject specimen looks genuine to me. The majority of copies that I've seen, not restrikes from original dies, were cast from common dies. Typically, the surfaces of the copies exhibit a granular look that can be mistaken at times for ED - environmental damage. The copies were mostly made and marketed in the 1960's and later as public interest in the centennial of the Civil War grew; this, given increasing media attention. As original Civil War tokens were relatively inexpensive back then, traded at about a dollar, each, the copies didn't seem to achieve much commercial success for their makers ... fortunately!

It looks genuine to me but more importantly what is it that you don't like about the look of it?

The specimen looks okay to me; Just worn. It's a common emission.

Specimens featuring Liberty's cap are always a fave for me.
