Bought this camera 7 or 8 years ago off e-bay used.
Mostly for its macro function and ability to take good accurate shots of entire coin with minimal setup.Kept settings until battery change.

Began experimenting with different settings to see how close a shot I could get.Such as RPMs and Doubled Die.

1939 D/D Washington bought as silver melt several years ago

1964 Kennedy pulled from circulation some years back, also has minor notching on some letters in LIBERTY and IN GOD and the date.

See any problems?I think both the extreme closeups are a bit fuzzy.I feel like the camera does exactly what I orignally bought it for.Any ideas, short of buying new equipment,on making the extreme closeup shots better?
Thanks in advance

I used a 990 for years before I bought a DSLR. The 990/995 are great cameras for coins, and have the advantage that many auxiliary lenses, including microscope eyepieces, were made for them. It looks like you're pushing the limits on the camera as-is, and your closeups are pretty darn good versus what I was able to do with my 990, so I can't make any suggestions to improve with the camera itself. If you want to improve your closeups further, you probably need to buy a microscope objective (infinite type) and mount it on the front of the lens. The image quality is set by the objective, so you can get whatever quality level you are willing to pay for. Your closeups are limited by the camera optics and the fact that you are cropping the photo rather than getting magnification optically. Cropped photos are almost always blurrier than optically-magnified photos due to things like diffraction and anti-aliasing filters in the camera. So the trick is to get more magnification so you can get away from 100% pixel level details and benefit from "artificial sharpening" due to downsizing the image.

rmpsrpms thanks for the input.I think I understood everything you said.I got a teleconverter lens with this unit when I bought it.Guess I'll play around with that and see what happens.Never have used it before.Wish I could justify the expense of a DSLR,but for what I use it for I can't.
I still use an old Olympus D-340R p&s(think older then 10yrs)to take my outdoor shots with because it has a great panaroma setting and simple software.

All the models you mention are only available second-hand.

Is there a (preferably inexpensive) new model that will do a similar job that you could recommend, please.

I saw a great detail photo of a 3rd century bronze Roman coin produced on a Nikon S3100, but that, too, is no longer in the shops.

I wish I could help you with that, but my knowledge base doesn't extend beyoud the two old cameras I use.
Just be sure to look for one with a good macro. The old Nikon I use shows a .8in on the macro. The OLYMPUS shows 4in on the macro.
I also do all my shots freehand.I suspect if you get to elaborate you will need a stand.

1998 Obverse clad layer missing.A little to much light washed out the copper look.Taken with the NIKON through a slab
