I use a small Canon 8MP digital camera model SD1100IS. The camera has a digital macro setting but this allows you to get only so close. I have found that simply holding a 10X jewelers loupe over the lens allows you some extra ZOOM. You need good light because you tend to block out light when you get in very close. Below are two sample pictures. Maybe this will help someone else who doesn't want to buy a new camera.

This picture is without the added loupe.

Thanks for the tip.

Nice fix. I always look for ways to work around the 'accepted" way of doing things - its fun.

Done quickly with no added light, just the light on in the room.
I have showed this to a couple older coin dealers how easy photos can be taken and used on ebay and places like here and they love the smartphone.

I usually don't use my mobile phone to take photos of coins and always prefer a camera, but as an emergency device the phone does its job. However, I also tested my phone camera without and with an additional lens and here are the results. The left one is took without additional lens and for the right picture I put a 20x Leuchtturm loupe in front of my phone lens. These pictures are NOT digitally edited, but the size of both is shrinked 3,4 times so just imagine how big the originals were!
