Holed coins like this are rather common in some countries. In many cases, such as this one, they use the hole so people can easily tell the difference between different denominations. Some European countries added holes to differentiate silver coins from their base-metl replacements.

In other places, particularly Africa and the Pacific Islands, coins were given holes because the traditional native dress does not have pockets; the holes allow the natives to carry money on strings instead.
