I recently inherited some coins most of which I could readily identify. However, this coin was included and I do not have a clue as how to identify it or its composition. It is fairly heavy and thick and obviously not a very decent representative. Could someone lead me in the right direction to identify it?

Wow! Thanks windchild. Now I know why I could not find anything on the internet about it. I tried British and Spanish - I never thought about Russian. Now I have a lead!

With your help, windchild, I was able to quickly find references to it. Saved me lots of time!

Yep, that's the two-headed eagle with scepter and orb of the House of Romanov!

Imperial Russia, Empress Catherine II, the Great (1762-1796), Moscow mint, 1763. It is hard to tell the denomination as underneath the mint mark, where the denomination should show, the coin has either been damaged or it is an 'overstrike'. Also, to the left of the spread eagle there appears the letter 'K' which, again, gives the impression that this coin may have been struck over another. This was apparently a common practice in the years 1763-67. There are CCF members much more knowledgeable than I am on this subject and they may possibly be able to offer their opinion.

Overstrike.Look to the right of the right wing on the eagle, you can see the undertype partially.
