Has anyone ever purchased a coin on ebay that turned out to be fake? Are there any tells or locations that I should look out for? Which coins are more prone to be fakes? I've been sticking to graded coins to avoid fakes but I want to roll the dice a little. Thanks everyone,

I have bought coin lots on ebay that have contained fakes, though it has rarely happens. I would say that you should look at the seller's feedback score and comments. I would say that out of 100s of purchases, I have had 3-4 fakes. I have noticed that it is usually in bulk coins, not singles as much. They try to sneak them in with a lot (or possibly, to give them the benifit of the doubt, they did not know themselves). Also look for fuzzy pictures, no refunds, "do not know anything about these", etc. Good luck and happy hunting

I bought a gold coin at an auction once that turned out to be fake. The auction house gladly listed it for me again in a later auction in a group of counterfeit coins. Needless to say, I lost money (but gained experience). ebay is no different to anywhere else. Check out the seller's credentials. Based on feedback, if he or she seems OK, they probably are. In my experience, the vast majority of sellers are very honest and would not knowingly sell fakes as real. Good sellers, if they make a mistake, will fix it.

I've bought many coins on ebay, and the vast majority were genuine and as advertised. I'm able to collect some odd coin series via ebay auctions that would be too difficult if I could only rely on local shows, local dealers, and the various other on-line auction houses. Anyway, besides the advice already given (feedback is huge), I'd add two more. 1) For high value coins, I generally stay away from overseas sellers. Chances are better of getting a fake and having no recourse. 2) ebay is an active marketplace, if a deal looks too good to be true other buyers might have noticed something that you haven't.

There shouldn't really be an issue with buying from anywhere, not just your own country, on ebay. If you pay with Paypal you have some protection. The only thing to watch for if you have to return the item to get your money back you have to pay for that (recorded) postage and that could be pricy if sending it overseas.
