so I have a question about acetone.
what coins is it safe to be used on? all? silver? copper?
I have some dirty, copper coins that look like they have glue on them. will the acetone hurt them? is this a form of cleaning and will be looked down upon?

if I do use acetone, how long should I soak them for? a few minutes? half an hour? how long is too long?
Rest in Peace

If you type in acetone in the box upper left "Search Coin Community" you will find plenty of information to read.

i use acetone for the coins we are keeping. I soak for anything up to a week, checking the colour of the acetone several times and changing it when it discolours. some coins it helps others it doesn't seem to do much at all, but mainly I use it to remove grease and oils from the coin, which can be done in a few seconds by, using 2 jars with clean acetone, place coin in first and give it a gently stir so the coin doesn't move, remove and place into second clean batch and repeat. remove and put coin on a microfibre cloth turning the coin without touching it, several times in 5 or so seconds till it is dry. put coin into holder without touching. thats pretty much my method.
i also put coin into deminerlized water to soak them clean, cheaper but takes longer and doesn't remove grease and oils.
|read the safety sheet of acetone, its dangerous stuff if handled wrong.

If your going to use Acetone for coins, you should soak a coin in Acetone for approximately 10 years. And with no cover on the jar. Placed outdoors in the Sun would be best.
As already noted if you use the Search tab and read all the post about Acetone, you may well find lots of info. Also, try coin cleaning, cleaning coins, etc. Above about the length of time I hope you realize I was joking. Over a minute of time is a waste. All coins are safe in Acetone unless they are made of Plastic.
