Proof Indian quarter eagles were prepared as matte proofs, not brilliant proof coiange. Matte proof gold looks very little, if at all, like business strike gold. If you go to the Heritage auction archives and look up some matte proof gold you will get a much better idea as to appearance than anything I can write.

In addition to what TomB posted, matte proof Indians were only struck from 1908 through 1915 in very small quantities. I believe the total mintage for all 8 years was under 2,000 pieces.

If you came across an impaired proof that had been circulated it would be very difficult to authenticate without knowledge of die characteristics.

I'm sure there is but I don't have a title for you right off hand.

If you have images we could give you an opinion here. True authentication would need to occur at a major TPG or by an Indian Head gold expert.
