Search For The Elusive PR-70 Franklin

Windycity Valued Member United States 366 Posts	Posted 01/20/2013 5:25 pm I have gone through literally thousands of Franklins in original proof sets trying to find one that has a shot at grading PR70. There are none in the Franklin series graded so by PCGS. I am posting three images for each coin taken with different lighting and/or angle. In each case, the photos indicated just the smallest hairline or mark which I believe precludes any from grading PR70. But, I am also not an expert on grading modern proofs. Welcome opinions on whether or not any of these would at least grade PR69. Coin #1 - under the right lighting, a hairline is evident on the shoulder. Coin #2 - under the right lighting, a small vertical mark is evident in the left (viewers left) field. Coin #3 - under the right lighting, a small angled mark is evident on the shoulder. Coin #4 - one photo suggest a small mark in the field in front of Franklins nose but can't see it under a microscope. Edited by Windycity 01/20/2013 5:38 pm Report this Post to the Staff

muddler Pillar of the Community United States 7190 Posts	Posted 01/20/2013 6:00 pm I am far away from being able to grade proof Franklins but I am striving for a cameo set. I feel if there is any specking or dusting as I have seen on your coins that that point alone would eliminate a proof 70. I also feel that any proof prior to 1968 did not have the protection of encapsulation and in so just movement inside the plastic they were issued in would eliminate any chance for a 70 designation. Windycity Valued Member United States 366 Posts	Posted 01/20/2013 6:19 pm It would be very difficult to find a true PR70 but there are PCGS grade cents, nickels, dimes and quarter from this same year. Tough but maybe not impossible. Report this Post to the Staff

However, all of those coins are magnificent and would be obscenely close to PCGS standards for that designation. :-) Report this Post to the Staff

For these photos, I was trying to get multiple images with different lighting and slightly different angles to pick up any imperfections. Report this Post to the Staff

westcoin Pillar of the Community United States 9792 Posts	Posted 02/21/2013 01:22 am I'm in agreement with Steve Caruso above, 70 is a hypothetical grade, even in moderns it shouldn't be given out (unless each picked planchet is prepped, polished and inspected to perfection under a loupe, then struck perfectly with a freshly polished dies that are "perfect", ejected into gloved hands and immediately slabbed, then maybe I'd give out a few 70 grades as a TPG. But what the TPG's are doing with 70 grades is a travesty IMO. But these 1963 Franklin Proofs are unreal in condition and should place at the top end of the population. Very nice.
