In one of those "I got sniped on one item so I didn't want to leave empty handed" scenarios I picked up a 2001-D Silver Buffalo. I see that it is listed in Modern Commemoratives, so it would not be considered a bullion piece?

Oh well, I have been wanting one of these for a while now. I may have to upgrade my Pelican case, it's getting crowded in there!

It is one of the more popular designs of the modern commemoratives. It has the distinction of selling out it's allotted mintage of 500,000 of the two types proof and BU. I was fortunate to get the two coin set from the mint back then.

Beautiful, one of the more valued modern commemoratives. 90% silver, but at 31.1 grams still an oz of silver. I would consider it bullion, but with so much numismatic value I think the aftermarket has priced it out of the bullion category.

But be careful there are a load of Indian Head and Buffalo silver rounds out there that look relatively the same, but without the 2001 date or mint mark. How much if you don't mind ?

It is 90% silver with comparable weight to a Morgan dollar.

Most definitely a modern commemorative dollar, not bullion. A very nice one at that.

Good pickup! It's definitely one of the more attractive and popular coins of the modern commemorative series - - " collector interest is strong for the proof as well as uncirculated version.

Yes, the coin is 90% silver, but it weighs 26.73 grams not 31.1 grams (the same as for all other modern US commemorative silver dollars). Its actual silver weight is 0.7734 troy ounces or roughly 77% of an ounce. At the current silver spot price, it's worth between $24 and $25 as bullion, but as noted above it carries a numismatic premium that pushes its price well beyond that of bullion.

I don't know why I did not cue on that earlier, not having the 0.999(9) fineness on the fields anywhere or the one ounce. 2001-D-Buffalo-Captured---Plan-

I picked it up for $150.

My apologizes of course @commems is right. As I cruise around the internet I bookmark pages that have reference info on them to refer to them later. I inadvertently referenced a page about the very silver rounds I was warning you about.

But......read the page and tell me what you think about the description of the coin.. The description of the coins suggests govt. issue but the weight and size suggest counterfeits. ?

denco7, deceptive inaccurate at best. Anybody can put together a website and put whatever they want on it.

I'm not sure there is anything truly devious going on here. I checked out the website and it does not appear that the website itself has any coins for sale. It appears all it is offering is information and links to coins that are for sale on other sites.

If that's really the case, I would say that they are not deliberately trying to deceive and might simply have made a mistake re: the coin's specifications on the web page previously referenced by denco7. For example, on this page of the site http://www.buffalocoin.com/all-silv...ffalo-coins/ they got the weight correct (though this missed on the diamter).

Sometimes folks are just a bit "sloppy" when it comes to the details.

Glad to see the price of these going down this is a great coin but the mintage numbers stop me from getting this coin at the current prices but they are starting to come down in price considering my 2009 RedBook list this coin for $275

That is one of the keys in the commem series. Not because of the mintage but the design commands a premium. I ran into a set for $300 a while ago and I couldn't bring myself to buy them. I wish I had now because I have not seen another since.

I just placed this Commemorative in the "Buy It Now" section due to an unexpected purchase. $150 takes him home.

BTW...I posted the wrong reverse image of this coin in the OP.

I was trying to explain Plan B to hubby last night, it didn't go so well: "So that is when you manage to spend money even when you lose?"
