Here sanother from the uncleaned lot - another cull which is coming along nicely. Its got some silver left on it - like a forree. Its 18mm. So, what is this? I have no experience with things that arent pure bronze - this is dipped, not washed. I'm going to try and get the silver to show a bit nicer - any tips? I'm hesitant to use polish, but cleaning isn't bringing out the shine. Some fella' holding up victory - being crowned, perhaps?

I reckon the legend is IOVIA AVG[G] - theres a well placed V outline that suggests this.

Then I hope no-one minds if I make the silver a bit more respectable! Hopefully dislodge some of the stuff while I'm going about it.

Okay, I've found it's either PAX AV[G/GG/GGG] or IOVI AV[G/GG].
If its IOVI AVGG then its Maximian or Diocletian - I'm saying Maximian based on the bust. However, I see no sign of the eagle and it doesn't look much like Jupiter.
-Scrap that, its Pax! This fellow is clothed.
If its PAX AVG then id say Diocletian - it matches design stryles to an issue made at the lyons mint for him. If it's PAX AVGGG then its minted by Carausius and that would certainly be something! But looking at the spacing of A and V i'd say it only have the 1 G - this is only credited to Diocletian and PAX AVG (apparently, a mint error not crediting co-augustus Maximian).

I can't see any of the letter's you are pointing out ben (or any other detail for that matter), sorry. Pretty much a cull at this point, I'm afraid.

VK - its from the culls! I'm getting pretty bored whilst the good ones clean and this is the first one with proper silver on it. The polishing took some off (eh) and heres a better picture to show the A V: Its also a period I havent got well represented yet. So Id like to glean something from it. Plus, its half the fun, trying to ID something I havent come across before - I'm learning a lot about the period.

Well, fair play to you I think you're correct with a Pax reverse but these were made by many Emperors. The bust will almost certainly be a radiate.
If it was found in the UK Tetricus or Victorinus are most likely, you need to find something solid if you hope to get even a loose ID, a mintmark, fieldmark, a crucial letter of the obverse legend.
Good luck but don't be temped to see things that aren't there.

Is the coin silver plated over some sort of bronze core? iron? I see what looks like rust in there.

Its silver over copper - no letters on the obverse but it doesn't look like victorinus or tetricus (at least, not the ones I've got).
They are UK finds though.
